SOLA: A 60 mile relay race that uses the existing public transport system.

Last weekend, we both ran in a relay race on the trails around Zurich. It was 116 km total with 14 members on the team (named the Toxico-Dynamics). Most of the team members were from the UTox (Environmental Toxicology) department here at Eawag, with a few adopted people like Darrell to round out the team.

We both agreed that running with the team and being on the trails of Zurich was really nice, but the best part of this race was that all of it could be accessed by public transportation. The Canton added some additional buses and trams for the day to handle all the people, but this was all done on existing routes. Our race bibs were our transportation pass for the day - this meant we were able to meet lots of people who were also using their race bibs and may not have otherwise been on the trains, buses and trams. You could look at the person opposite you and tell they were racing also - conversation was easy from there.

Ruth ran early in the race and then hopscotched to some of the other legs to cheer on the Toxico-Dynamics. For Darrell's leg of the race, Ruth was at the start, got Fiona, and then caught a tram to Darrell's finish. Guess who got there first?
