Recycling the Swiss way

Today is our town's "papier-sammlung" which means paper recycling day.  This happens pretty infrequently compared to Bellingham, WA (which is a weekly pick up).  Here it is every 2 months, so you really don't want to miss paper recycling day.  Fortunately, neat little bundles of twine-tied paper start to show up by the dumpster to remind us.  We've always marveled at how neat the Swiss made bundles are compared to our American made bundles.  I've been told that some families actually have a machine that helps them stack and bundle their papers!

Another interesting factoid about waste in Switzerland is about what happens when you don't follow the rules.  In our town, you buy stickers (Abfallgebeuhrenmarke) with the Fehraltorf crest on them.   Depending on how big your bag is, you stick different amounts of these Marke on your bag.  If you fail to do this, they won't take your bag and/or someone will look through the bag to find information to identify the culprit and you'll be fined - the person we know that this happened to had to pay 90CHF.

P.S. After I wrote this, we went out and found some of our bundles had been rejected and left - it had to be the cardboard we snuck in there... thankfully they didn't take it to the garbage police! :)
