Solo journey...

Darrell and Fiona have been out of town all week at our friend’s family cabin near Rosswald, where there is lots of alpine skiing to be done right out the back door. In search of good cross country ski trails though, Darrell and Fiona have ventured a little further than the nearby slopes. Last night when Darrell called, almost the first thing he said was “Guess who got left on the train…” There were two things I knew immediately. The first was Fiona was left on the train at some point that day and the second was that the story had a happy ending (or Darrell wouldn’t have started the conversation that way) so I laughed and listened. The story went like this… Darrell was in the process of getting off of the train. He was getting his skis, people started going into the train (this can be really challenging if they don’t wait to get on before everyone is off, which is the unspoken rule most of the time), Fiona wouldn’t go because of the confusion, Darrell went thinking she would follow as usual, and the second he was off the train, the doors closed (separating Darrell from Fiona) and wouldn’t open back up, the train started moving, and there you have it - Fiona was off on her own adventure! We don’t know what happened to her on the train, but apparently Darrell had befriended a lady who was still on the train. She saw his panic and figured out what had happened. I like to imagine that this lady took care of Fiona during her solo journey (thanks if you did!). Ultimately, Darrell figured out how to use the call box at the unmanned train station he was at. The conductor was called, and they arranged for Darrell to ski to pick her up a few train stations away (that was faster than any other option). When Darrell got there, another lady was keeping her for him. As Darrell said, she was fine when he got to her, it was more traumatic for him than for Fiona… A nice story to laugh about now though :)

  1. She did have her leash (the Rad Dog one that rolls up into her collar), but I honestly think it might have been worse with all of the people coming on - that was the problem, it is really tough to get off when they don't wait...
